A Woman in the Woods
My gender journey was just like anyone else's. I was walking through the woods late in the evening, when I saw a light in the distance. I approached the light, and came to a old woman holding a lantern. She had bandages over her eyes, but when I called out to her she looked at me. Looked through me.
I was stopped as soon as she moved her head, but not by choice. She opened her mouth as if to speak, but her lips did not move. Then I heard her voice. It came from behind me as a whisper, her mouth open, but unmoving. “Do you wish to live in truth?” she rasped.
“Yes,” I said without speaking.
“Do you wish to know?” The voice ringing clear.
“Yes” I wanted to scream, but I could not breathe.
Suddenly the woman was in front of me, her mouth ever widening, and she raised her hand, placing it on my chest. It was warm, radiating a heat that seemed to come from her fingers. Once again from behind, whispered in both ears I heard, “Then learn”.
I awoke on the side of the road. I do not know what forest I walked, nor had I ever seen those trees before. You know, the usual.
